Pequi Upcycling

NanoPequi™ is a pequi active for cosmetics developed from the peel extract of Caryocar brasiliense, turning a still under-valued part of the fruit into a technological nanoactive for skincare. Rich in phenolic compounds and antioxidants, it was developed to explore functionalities relevant to skin-protection formulations, including its antioxidant potential and its performance as an SPF Booster.

By combining these bioactives with Nanoterra's nanotechnology, NanoPequi™ opens new possibilities for photoprotective formulations, with the potential to increase system performance and help optimise the UV filter load, including mineral filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. All of it from a Cerrado by-product, connecting cosmetic performance, Brazilian biodiversity and the circular economy.

Born in the Cerrado, transformed by science

NanoPequi™ is born in the Brazilian Cerrado, the biome of origin of Caryocar brasiliense and a territory deeply tied to the culture and the production chain of pequi. Its development starts from the use of the fruit peel, a residue generated after processing the raw material, creating a new possibility of value generation from regional biodiversity.

Through Nexo™, Nanoterra's proprietary nanostructuring technology, the peel extract is transformed into a nanoactive using green synthesis principles and low energy input. The result is a stable, functional and water-soluble ingredient, developed to make its incorporation into cosmetic formulations easier.

Main activities of pequi peel proven in literature

Antioxidant

Pequi peel is rich in phenolic compounds and flavonoids with antioxidant activity, able to act against free radicals. Ingredients obtained from this raw material can therefore contribute to protecting the skin against oxidative damage related to ageing.

Antifungal

Pequi presents natural compounds with potential antifungal activity, especially in extracts obtained from parts of the fruit and its plant residues. This property indicates potential for cosmetic applications related to skin protection and balance.

SPF Booster

Pequi peel presents bioactive compounds able to absorb UV radiation and studies show an increase in SPF depending on concentration, indicating potential to act as a booster, helping to increase photoprotective performance.
